Paddington Bear first appeared in a 1958 British children’s book, A Bear Called Paddington, written by Michael Bond and has been featured in over twenty books, which have been translated into over 30 languages. Newly illustrated by R.W. Alley, Paddington is a stowaway who came from “Darkest Peru” to London’s Paddington Station where Mr. and Mrs. Brown discover him wearing an old hat and duffle coat, sitting on his battered suitcase with a note attached to his coat that reads, “Please look after this bear. Thank you.” The Brown family take him home and name him “Paddington”.
Paddington is kindhearted with a love of marmalade and an endless capacity for innocently getting into trouble, yet, he tries so hard to get things right. Just like the Brown family, readers have taken Paddington into their hearts and he has become a much-loved character. In fact, British tunnellers chose a Paddington soft toy as the first item to pass through to their French counterparts when the two sides of the Channel Tunnel were linked in 1994.
